Aaloo-Chilly - Chapter22

Although Chilly had broken off his friendship with Aaloo, he went to Aaloo’s house to argue with him, but fell asleep while waiting. Aaloo woke him up. As soon as Chilly remembered the singing competition, he felt a burning sensation all over his body. He told Aaloo to do something to stop it. Let’s see what Chilly says next…

I was flying round and round when Aaloo suddenly raised his huge trunk and I went crashing into it - belly-first!  It felt as though my whole stomach flipped over. He picked me up, sat me on a window ledge and said, “Why are you singing? Why don’t you skate like me? I think you would be the best skater and would win all the competitions!”

What was wrong with Aaloo?! I told him, “I don’t want to skate.”

He then said, “I promise I’ll always let you win. You’ll become the world’s best skater!”

What was Aaloo talking about? I became irritated. “I don’t want to skate. I don’t like skating and how could I even do it? My wings would get in the way and I’d start flying instead! World’s best skater or the jungle’s best skater… I just don’t want to be a skater! What are you talking about?”Aaloo started speaking without fully listening to me, “Chilly, do you remember when you wrote our friendship song and took me to the mountains to sing it to me?”

I was puzzled. Why was Aaloo talking about this now?

“Don’t you remember?” he asked.  “Your voice was echoing across the mountains and I found it so amazing!”

I immediately remembered that day. I had written the song for Aaloo’s birthday and had sung it to him then. Aaloo was so happy that he even tried to dance to my song! I couldn’t help but laugh as I remembered it.

Aaloo said, “But you probably didn’t really enjoy singing that time, did you?”

“What?  I really enjoyed singing that time,” said Chilly.

Aaloo replied,  “No one else was even there to listen to you and I didn’t give you any prize. So, how could you have enjoyed it?”

What was he talking about? I immediately replied, “I don’t sing for others; I sing because I like to sing. You didn’t have to give me any prize. You enjoyed my song - that was the biggest prize for me.”
Aaloo became very serious and said, “So, Chilly, how could you forget something so simple? You enjoy singing, not winning. You’re happy whenever you’re singing, whether you’re with me or on your own, whether you’re flying or drinking a Chilly Shake, whether you’re taking part in a singing competition or not - you just love to sing. You don’t sing because you want to be the best singer; you sing because it makes you happy! If you wanted to be the best at something, then you could’ve chosen skating, dancing, or anything else. But you chose singing - because you love it.”
